The Kasbah du Toubkal

Discover Ltd has been operating educational tours in Morocco since 1978. In 1990 we purchased the Kasbah du Toubkal, high in the Atlas mountains just south of Marrakech. Built originally as a summer retreat by a wealthy member of the local ruling family, the Glaoui, following Moroccan independence in 1956, the Glaouis lost their power and the Kasbah was abandoned and fell into ruin.

The Kasbah du Toubkal was completely restored using local labour and traditional building techniques, and without the use of electricity which only reached the valley in 1997. The Kasbah du Toubkal has won several awards for its contribution to sustainable tourism, including “Best Mountain Resort” in the Responsible Tourism Award 2004 and the British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Award (Built Environment category) in 2002. Its commanding position overlooking the village of Imlil and towered over by Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa, is truly breathtaking.

Accommodation for students and teachers is in our berber salons—bohemian chambers strewn with blankets, rugs and cushions, clustered around the inner courtyard. Normally, if hotel bookings allow, one of the hotel rooms is allocated for the lead teacher of each party.
