France and the Cévennes

The Eagle’s Nest is located in the Parc National des Cévennes. Established in 1970, this is one of only 5 National Parks within mainland France. It is an exceptional area of natural beauty, with three distinct geological zones, which reflect in the variety of landscape, soils, flora and fauna found in a relatively small area. Recognised for its exceptional biodiversity, in 1984, the Parc National des Cévennes was also designated a World Biosphere Reserve, and has also recently become a Natura 2000 site. It therefore has International, European and National recognition for its habitats and species of conservation importance, landscapes and geology and traditional architecture and “patrimony”.

From this exceptional geographical position, we are also in easy striking distance of small rural settlements; the key settlement in the area, Mende, for studying urban morphology; the Tarn Gorge and its spectacular limestone scenery and Honeypot settlements; and the Mediterranean coast, with its tourist resorts and the Camargue Regional Nature Reserve. We have all of the benefits of being located in a National Park, whilst having access to many environmental and social issues to study, from the environmental impact of skiing and large-scale afforestation, to the decline of coal mining in a local settlement, from managing tourism at the Pont du Gard, to urban planning in Montpelier.
